Mic test: check your microphone and hear yourself back

Test your microphone online in seconds. See its level live, hear yourself back, and find out why a mic is quiet, crackly or not working. Free, nothing kept.

How to test your mic online

  1. Press Test my mic, and allow the browser to use your microphone.
  2. Talk as you normally would, and watch the bar and the readings.
  3. Press Record 5 seconds and play it back to hear yourself.
  4. Pick another mic from the list if the wrong one is in use.

How the test works

The page listens to your mic with the browser’s own noise cutting turned off. That way you hear the mic itself, the way a recording would.

It keeps the last five seconds in mind. The loudest moment tells you if your voice is loud enough, and the quietest tells you how noisy the room is.

Fixing what it finds

  • Too quiet. Move closer to the mic, a hand’s width away, or turn up its input level in your computer’s sound settings.
  • Too loud. Move back a little or turn the input level down. A recording that crackles can’t be fixed later.
  • A noisy room. Turn off fans and close the window. What is left, the noise remover takes out of the recording.

Once it sounds right, the voice recorder records and saves your voice.

Questions

Is anything recorded or uploaded?

No. The test listens in your browser and keeps nothing. The five-second playback is thrown away when you leave the page.

Why can’t the page hear my mic?

Check that the browser is allowed to use the mic, that the mic is not muted, and that the right one is picked. On a Mac, also allow the browser under Privacy and Security, Microphone.

What is a good level?

Your voice should reach the green part of the bar, around −18 to −6 dBFS. Red means it is too loud and will crackle.

What does room noise mean?

It is how loud the room is when nobody talks. A fan, a computer or traffic raises it, and every recording picks it up.

Does it work for Discord, Zoom or Meet?

Yes. If the mic works here, it works in those apps too, as long as they use the same mic.

How can I hear myself on my mic?

Press Record 5 seconds and play it back. You hear just what others hear on a call or in a recording.

Why is my mic so quiet?

The mic may be too far away, or its input level is low. Move to a hand’s width from it, then turn up the input level in your computer’s sound settings.

Why does my mic show 0 volume in Windows 11?

Windows may be using another mic, or the app is not allowed to use it. In Settings, open System, Sound, and pick your mic under Input. Then check Microphone under Privacy and security.
