How to play a tone at any frequency
- Type a frequency in Hz, or drag the slider.
- Pick a wave, and which speakers to play it in.
- Start with the volume low, then press Play.
- Press Sweep 20 Hz to 20 kHz to run through every pitch.
How it works
Your browser makes the tone on the spot. Nothing is recorded, and nothing leaves your device.
The slider moves faster through the high tones, the way your ears hear pitch. Each step feels about the same size, from deep bass to a thin whistle.
Every tone fades in and out over a few hundredths of a second. That stops the pop a sudden start or stop would make.
The four waves
- Sine is the purest tone, one pitch with nothing on top. Use it for hearing checks and tuning.
- Square sounds buzzy and hollow, like an old video game.
- Triangle is softer than a square and close to a flute.
- Sawtooth is bright and harsh, like a brass sound on a synth.
Tips
- Check your speakers. Play the 1 kHz tone and switch between left and right. If the wrong side plays, your cables or settings are swapped.
- Learn what hum sounds like. Power lines run at 50 Hz in most of the world and 60 Hz in North America. If you hear that buzz in a recording, the noise remover takes it out.
- Use headphones for the low end. Phone and laptop speakers can’t play much below 100 Hz. Headphones or bigger speakers can.
- Checking a microphone instead? The mic test shows its level live and plays you back.
