How to remove silence from audio
- Drop the recording above, or choose it.
- Pick how long a pause can be, and how short to make it.
- Press Shorten the pauses, then compare the two.
- Save the shorter file as an mp3 or wav.
How it works
The tool measures how loud the file is in slices of 10 milliseconds. It finds the level of the background noise, and sets a line a little above it.
A run of slices under that line, longer than the length you pick, is a pause. The middle of it comes out, and the quiet you keep is split between its two ends.
Each join fades over 10 milliseconds, so you won’t hear a click. Words and other sounds stay just as they were.
Tips for a natural result
- Keep a little quiet. Half a second sounds relaxed, like a talk. A quarter second sounds quick, like an edited podcast.
- Take out noise first. A loud fan or hum can hide the pauses. The noise remover takes it out, so pauses are easier to find.
- Trim the ends. The audio trimmer cuts the chatter at the start and the end.
- Make a transcript. A tighter recording is quicker to turn into text with audio to text.
